Dear Jason,

Further to your email on the 13th December, please find the Trust’s response below. Your request has been allocated the following reference: 18861 please quote this reference in any future correspondence with the Trust.

I am requesting the information regarding risk assessment for ambulance staff and the wearing of PPE in particular protective vest.

Please find attached the risk assessment

I would also like the statistics relating to injuries received as a result of assaults on ambulance staff for 2018. Please categorise into groups:

-Physical assault
- Blunt force trauma
- Knife

EEAST currently have record of 264 staff subjected to physical assaults in calendar year 2018 (up to 27/12/2018). This is the number of staff assaulted and NOT the number of injuries. Some physical assaults result in no physical injury (e.g. spitting that lands on uniform constitutes a physical assault).

Unfortunately the Trust is unable to break down the nature of injury as this information is not on a searchable field. The Trust would be required to look through every individual report to extract the information required and in some cases to contact staff as details are not always recorded. The Trust has calculated that this would take longer than the eighteen hours to extract and collate the information you require. Therefore this would exceed the appropriate limit and as such unable to answer your request under s.12 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I am obliged to advise you that if you are dissatisfied with the Trust’s response to your request you have a right to complain to the Trust and should set out your concerns to the Freedom of Information Officer, EEAST, Hospital Approach, Broomfield, Chelmsford, Essex, CM1 7WS or by email to [East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust request email]. If you remain dissatisfied following this, you have a right under Section 50 of the FOIA to seek a determination from the Information Commissioner on whether the Act has been properly applied by the Trust. For more information, please see www.ico.gov.uk.

Under the Accessible Information Standard the Trust are required to ask our FOI applicants equality and diversity questions. You are under no obligation; however we would be grateful if you could complete the form attached and email back to us.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further information.

Kind regards

FoI Officer
East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust
