Rising tide of hatred in our society
Dear Scottish Government,
The Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021 came into effect on 01 April 2023. In an article by the BBC the first minister is quoted saying it was designed to deal with what he called a "rising tide of hatred" in society. (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c51j...)
In answer to a previous foi submitted by H Macleod, your reference: 202100150427, of 04/02/2021 the Scottish Government stated in the answer.
"The data we receive from Police Scotland for the production of the National Statistics on Recorded Crime, is a simple count of the number of crimes and offences, for each local authority which the
police have recorded. This means that we do not hold any specific information as to the nature of any
individual crime including specific information about the victim or the intentions of the perpetrator."
In view of this previous response, please can you provide the data which informed the government on the need for this new legislation, in particular can you provide the data the government has which supports the first ministers statement of a rising tide of hatred in our society.
Yours faithfully,
J Davies
