RFU

The request was successful.

Dear Sport England,

Sport England gave the RFU £12.6 million in 2017 ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/38881709 ). RFU is the governing body of English rugby. The anthem of England rugby team is "Swing low, sweet chariot". "Swing low, sweet chariot" allegedly has connotations to slavery and its victims.

Does Sport England have a position about "Swing low, sweet chariot"? Has "Swing low, sweet chariot" ever been discussed by Sport England (e.g. someone may have said it might be controversial) and can I have all the related documents?

Yours faithfully,

Anne Smith

FOI, Sport England

Dear Anne,

Thank you for your recent request for information about the Rugby Football
Union (RFU).

Sport England is a public body which works to increase the number of
people who take part in sport and physical activity on a regular basis. We
invest government and National Lottery funds in a wide range of
organisations, including the RFU in support of this aim. The England rugby
anthem is beyond the scope of our involvement with the RFU and we do not
have a position on such matters, which are for the governing body in
question to determine. We have no record of any discussions about the
England rugby anthem having taken place.

This completes our response to your information request.

As a public body, Sport England is subject to the terms of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 and this means you are entitled to complain if you
are unhappy with the way we have handled your information request and/or
ask us to review our decision.

Dear FOI,

Thank you but I have a follow up.

Do you have a policy or guidelines about giving public money to organisations where there is potential or known problems (like racism, sexism, homophobia, violence)?

How does Sports England define racism?

Also, is there any records of discussion at Sports England about the fans of Tottenham Hotspur Football Team chanting words which might be racially offensive? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lon...

Yours sincerely,

Anne Smith
