Revenge porn data

M Esslemont made this Freedom of Information request to York Minster Police as part of a batch sent to 43 authorities
This authority is not subject to FOI law, so is not legally obliged to respond (details).
This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

York Minster Police did not have the information requested.

Dear York Minster Police,

I hope you and the team are well. Please can you provide figures on the number of cases of revenge porn reported to the force in the year 2015/16.

Please can you also disaggregate data according to the following information:
- The crime outcome (no action, charge, caution etc) of the offences as well as the number of offences where the victim did not support or withdrew support for police action
- The number of victims under the age of 18
- The gender of the victim

Please also provide, where possible, cases in which the case involved social media. I understand this isn't routinely logged, so please just include notes from free-text searches for key words ("social media" , "Twitter", "Facebook" etc) where available.

Yours faithfully,
M Esslemont

Thank you for your recent request for information regarding the above,
which has been passed to me for attention and reply. Please note that this
organisation does not respond to FOI requests, as the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 (“the Act”) does not apply to us. This is because:

(1) neither York Minster nor the Minster’s governing body (the Chapter of
York) is a “public authority” as defined by Schedule 1 of the Act, and

(2) with reference to Schedule 1 Paragraph 64 of the Act, this is not an
organisation that “by virtue of any enactment has the function of
nominating individuals who may be appointed as Special Constables”. York
Minster’s Cathedral Constables are nominated for appointment on a common
law, not a statutory, basis.

“York Minster Police” is simply the name that we use for York Minster’s
in-house security team – it is not a police force, nor is it a part of the
national policing service. The police force that is responsible for the
investigation of all crime and for responding to all 101/999 Police calls
in all parts of the City of York is North Yorkshire Police.

The York Minster Police team is employed by the Chapter of York to provide
a security service within York Minster and property owned by Chapter in
the adjacent Minster Precinct – which it does by agreement with, and
subject to the primacy of, North Yorkshire Police. North Yorkshire Police
retains full statutory authority and responsibility for maintaining a
policing service throughout the whole of the City of York, including all
parts of the Minster Precinct.

I hope that this clarification is helpful to you.

Regards,

Andy Oates

Dear Andy Oates,

Thank you for this - I understand that there may be a delay due to the impact of coronavirus. I'd like to amend my request to account for two time periods, to save you having to answer subsequent requests. This information is necessary, but hopefully it will not be too onerous to provide.

Please can provide the information originally requested for the year 2015/2016, but also for 2019/2020? I recognise that this will take at least an additional 20 working days to provide.

Thank you so much for your understanding.

Yours sincerely,
M Esslemont
