Michael McCarthy

Dear Sir or Madam,

I want to know what percentage of privately-owned land in the English countryside has become accessible to the public as a result of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, 2000.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Sarah Waterfield,

Thank you for letting me know that only 6.5% of the land surface of England is accessible to its citizens.

This may be an even more paltry proportion than immediately appears, as this 6.5% obviously includes common land which was already accessible before the Countryside and Rights of Way Act was passed. I therefore formally request now to be informed what percentage of the land surface of England was publicly accessible before that Act came into force.

Yours sincerely,

Michael McCarthy
