InfoRequest, Cardiff University

Dear Fergus,

I acknowledge receipt of your email received by this office on 25th May 2021.

Your request will now be dealt with under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and has been allocated reference FOI21-225 which should be quoted in all correspondence. We will respond to your request within 20 working days starting the next working day after receipt, therefore you can expect to receive a response no later than 23rd June 2021.

Please note that in order to fulfil your request we need to liaise with other teams across the University. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, most staff are now working remotely and have intermittent access to information held in hard copy. However, we will do our best to meet this deadline and keep you informed should we be unable to do so.

Where we consider that we will not be able to meet the deadline or if further time is required to consider the public interest test we will contact you as soon as possible and give you a revised date for response.

In some circumstances a fee may be payable and, if that is the case, we will let you know. A fees notice will be issued to you, and you will be required to pay before we will proceed to deal with your request.

Yours sincerely

InfoRequest, Cardiff University

Dear Fergus

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated 25
May 2021.

For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.

1). Does your university have an active policy in place regarding which
companies the careers department does and does not assist in recruiting
university members? This may be a policy specific to the careers
department, or a wider policy which also applies to the careers
department.

For the purpose of this FOI, ‘university members’ includes:

    - Current students, both undergraduate and postgraduate

    - Alumni and former students of the university

For the purpose of this FOI, ‘recruiting’ refers to any situation, in
which the careers department plays a part, where university members are a
potential source of employees or volunteers to a third party outside of
the university. This includes:

    - Events in which the careers department is an organiser

    - Digital media controlled by the careers department, including
websites, webpages, social media and mailing lists

    - Physical materials from the careers department, such as mailings,
posters, leaflets and brochures

We do not currently have a formal policy in place but have clear
guidelines which allow our Employer Engagement team to determine, on a
case-by-case basis, which companies we would not assist in promoting
opportunities or building-their brand via our online jobs board or
employer-led events online or on-campus. Examples of this are
vacancies with tobacco companies, or produce tobacco-based products, due
to the research that Cardiff University does with Cancer Research UK.

2). If your university does have an active policy in place regarding which
companies the careers department does and does not assist in recruiting
university members, please provide a copy of the policy either as an
attachment to your response or through the inclusion of a link to where it
is published on your website.

If this policy forms a part of a wider policy document, please specify
which page we need to refer to in order to locate this information.

 Not applicable.

3). If your university does not have an active policy in place as outlined
above, please can you confirm whether there are any exclusions in place
regarding which companies the careers department does and does not assist
in recruiting university members. If not in policy form, exclusions might
exist in the form of written guidelines or procedures. If any exclusions
are in place please list what they are.

The following is a copy of guidance issued to employers when they wish to
advertise jobs through the Careers department.

Employer guidelines: Advertising vacancies with Cardiff University

Cardiff University offers a free advertising service for employers  to
promote students and graduate opportunities via TARGETconnect,  our online
vacancy board.

The below guidelines are designed to help you attract and recruit our
diverse and talented students and graduates.

1.                   Types of vacancies we can advertise:

We invite employers to upload the following vacancies (both in the UK and
overseas*) in accordance with the guidelines listed below:

1.      Permanent graduate vacancies

2.      Placements and internships

2.                  Types of vacancies we cannot advertise:

We have a responsibility to our students which means that we are unable

are voluntary placements for charities or as part of a degree course. For
more information about best practice in internships recruitment

unless they are voluntary opportunities with registered charities. We
recommend that employers pay students a salary that reflects the level of
work our students or graduates are undertaking.

4.      Jobs for current students that require a commitment of more than
15 hours per week during semester.

5.      Adverts or promotions from Recruitment Agencies that do not
include a named employer and specific job details in the job advertisement
or promotional information.

applicant.

7.      Opportunities that require the taking of medication such as
participation in drug trials.

materials which may be used by other students,.

9.      Commission-only roles or ‘pyramid’ network or similar style
