Dear Ministry of Defence,

Could you please provide me with the total figure spent on providing research grants or bursaries to military academics who are not currently serving, or have agreed to serve in the future, in the British armed forces. Furthermore could you provide me with a complete list of the funding and bursaries provided by the Ministry of Defence for academic research.

Yours faithfully,

Harry Raffal

Dear Mr Raffal,
I have received your recent request for information under the FOI Act 2000.
In order to process this request I would appreciate if you could let me know what period of time you wish the figures to cover. For example, financial years 2007/08 and 2008/09 etc. Wider periods will invoke Section 12 of the Act that makes provision for public authorities to refuse requests for information where the cost of dealing with them would exceed the appropriate limit, which for central government is set at £600. This represents the estimated cost of one person spending 3.5 working days in determining whether the department holds the information, locating, retrieving and extracting the information.

It is also likely that we would not know if the individual was a 'military academic': whether currently serving or agreed to serve in the future in the British Armed Forces.

Regards,

Dear DST-Strategy SEC 1 (John, Richard),

Thank you for your reply.

Could you provide me with the figures for the years 2009 and 2010 (obviously 2010 might be incomplete but the most recent figures you hold would be most appreciated)

If you do not hold information relating to the current or future occupation of the individuals who received any monetary support I completely understand. If this is the case, or largely the case, could you show on the list of the funding and bursaries provided by the
Ministry of Defence for academic research which are open to service personnel, or those who will serve, and those open to all British citizens.

Should cost become a factor then I would prefer the list of bursaries provided by the MoD, followed by the financial figures.

Thank you for your time. In the interest of avoiding confusion can you indicate the latest point you will have to answer by, is the original 20 days or 20 days since this clarification?

Yours sincerely,

Harry Raffal
