Research funding and consultancy fees

The request was successful.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am seeking information about research funding and consultancy fees your college receives.

1. What is the total amount, in pounds sterling, that you have received in research funding from the companies below in the last five financial years. Details should be broken down for each company, year-by-year for the last five financial years.

BAE Systems, Raytheon, Airbus, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell.

2. The total amount, in pounds sterling, that you have has received in the form of industrial consultancy and industrial research fees from these companies in the last five financial years. Details should be broken down for each company, year-by-year for the last five financial years.

Yours faithfully,

R Vidal

David Palfreyman, New College, Oxford

Thanks for your FOIA enquiry.
Research grants/contracts at Oxford are almost entirely a
University/Department matter and only very rarely does a College enter
into a research contract (the colleges are about undergraduate teaching).
Hence the answer to your questions is a Nil or Not Applicable reply from
New College, as I suspect will be the case for any other Oxford college
you have approached.
Regards.

Dear David Palfreyman,

Thank you for your reply. I have the following additional questions.

Please treat this as a separate request under Freedom of Information legislation.

1. What is the latest available value of your college’s directly-held investment in shares or bonds of the following companies: BAE Systems, Raytheon, Airbus, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell.
2. What was the value of these holdings a year before the most recent valuation given above, or at the most recent previous valuation?
3. What dividend income and/or bond yield did the college receive from these investments in the last 12-month period for which records are available?
4. Does your college have any other investments in these companies via pooled investments? What is the value and dividend income from these investments?

Yours sincerely,

R Vidal

David Palfreyman, New College, Oxford

Thanks.
No directly held stock in any such companies.
Will need to check what our pooled funds have by way of exposure - the
Vanguard Global MSCI tracker will have exposure by definition, but it will
be more random as to what is held by our active managers such as
Lansdowne, Ruffer, Troy, Heronbridge.
Regards.
Alan - what do our latest listing show?

David Palfreyman, New College, Oxford

Dear R Vidal

New College has not, itself, ever had direct share-holdings in any of the
companies at (1). Only one investment manager (Ruffer LLP) holds equities,
at its discretion, for New College; Ruffer within that discretion is also
free to invest on the College’s behalf in its own pooled funds.

All other managed investments are in pooled funds.

Ruffer has no holdings in any of the companies identified at (1).
Historically, Lockheed Martin was held until it was sold in March 2016
(£118k). We don’t have detail of what is held in any of Ruffer’s pooled
funds.

Other pooled funds: none show the companies at (1) in its latest top
holdings (Q1 2019, other than DH, which is Q4 2018).

o Lansdowne: Developed Markets Long Only Fund
o Heronbridge: Heronbridge United Kingdom Equity Fund
o Troy: Trojan Fund (Trojan Investment Funds)
o Vanguard: Vanguard FTSE Developed World Common Contractual Fund
o Vanguard: Vanguard Emerging Markets Stock Index Fund
o Towers Watson: Towers Watson Liberty 1 Fund
o Doughty Hanson: Doughty Hanson & Co V LP No. 2
