I am writing to request information on the research and financial relationships the university holds in the following companies: BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, QinetiQ, Rolls-Royce, GKN, Cobham, Elbit Systems, Leonardo, L3 Technologies, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Thales, Boeing, General Dynamics, Airbus, United Technologies, Babcock International, Serco, Meggitt, AirTanker, Chemring and Ultra Electronics and any other arms companies.

Additionally, I am writing to request information on the contracts the university holds with the Ministry of Defence and equivalent bodies and armed forces of other countries.

Please include the following information:

1) For each of the above companies/bodies please list all the projects, industrial consultancy and industrial research that the university has received funding for over the past four academic years, 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and 2016-2017. Details should be broken down by each university department, showing the company or government body who have provided funding, the start and end date of each contract, title of the project/research, and total funding of each project/research year-by-year for the past four academic years. Lastly, please list all external organisations and bodies that are also participants in the projects/research identified.

2) Does the university have, or is it working towards, an ethical research policy that excludes, or could exclude, the companies listed above?

2017 in which you requested information regarding Research and Financial
Relationships with the Arms Trade.

 

Your request will now be dealt with under the Freedom of Information Act
2000 and has been allocated reference FOI17-207 which should be quoted in
all correspondence. We will respond to your request within 20 working days
starting the next working day after receipt, therefore you can expect to
receive a response no later than 17^th August 2017.

 

Where we consider that we will not be able to meet this deadline or if
further time is required to consider the public interest test we will

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated

For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses:

2) Does the university have, or is it working towards, an ethical research
policy that excludes, or could exclude, the companies listed above?

 

Cardiff University has an Ethical Investment Policy which prohibits the
investment into companies based upon three parameters: -

 

·           Tobacco: any companies Involved in producing and distributing
tobacco products where revenues exceed 10% of global earnings;

·           Armaments – any companies producing weapons and weapon
systems, including cluster munitions and anti-personnel landmines where
revenues exceed 10% of global earnings. Companies whose main business
includes the supply of strategic components (such as weapons guidance
systems) and services are also excluded (main business is any activity
whose revenues exceed 10% of global earnings);

·           Code of Ethics – any companies that do not have a Code of
Ethics Policy as per EIRIS (Ethical Investment Research Service)
guidelines (or similar) or such companies that display poor ESG
(Environmental, Governance and Social) factors and show little sign of
improving.

 

 

I trust this information satisfies your enquiry.  The University has a
Freedom of Information Complaints Procedure should you feel dissatisfied
with this response or the way in which your request was handled.
Complaints must be made in writing and must set out why you believe the
University has not met its obligations under the Freedom of Information

will be responsible for overseeing the review.
