Dear Department for Transport,
I have sold my car to a dealer and do not have the V5C reference anymore as this was passed onto the dealer when I sold it; however I am still receiving letters from DVLA to tax that vehicle and require the V5C reference to allow me to inform DVLA that I am no longer the owner of that vehicle.
Dear Claire Hennelly,
Thank you for your enquiry received on 18/7/2019.
Your case reference number is 01640098.
I appreciate you contacting DVLA to seek clarification on the matter.
I am afraid there are no vehicle details provided in your e-mail to check
the vehicle record, however if you are receiving letters from us this
would indicate you are still listed as the registered keeper.
If you wish us to check this please reply with the following:
- Full name and address
- Vehicle registration number
- Vehicle make, model and colour
I am sorry, but we are unable to accept notification of the sale/disposal
of your vehicle via email.
As you no longer have the V5C you will need to send a signed letter to the
address below quoting your full name and address, the registration number,
make & model of the vehicle, the exact date of sale/transfer/scrapping and
the name & address of the new keeper/motor trader/scrap dealer (if
available). Please write to:

of your vehicle tax by post within 6 weeks (if applicable).
If you pay your tax via Direct Debit it will be cancelled automatically
and future payments will be stopped when we receive notification that you
have sold/transferred /scrapped the vehicle.
Please note that there is a 10% surcharge on 6 monthly vehicle tax
renewals (5% for 6 monthly Direct Debit) that is not refundable.
Please note we are issuing automatic acknowledgement letters to confirm
that keepers are no longer responsible for the vehicle. If you do not
receive the confirmation letter within 4 weeks please contact us at
I hope this helps.
