Request for information regarding roadworks

The request was refused by Bedford Borough Council.

Dear Bedford Borough Council,

I am writing to request information regarding the number of roadworks instances that have taken place within your council locality.

Specifically I would like the number of instances of roadworks that have occurred from 1st January 2021 to present. If possible, I would also request the cost of these roadworks during this time period.

I am happy to clarify this request if necessary. Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Jamie Dixon

Dear Jamie Dixon

Request pursuant to Environmental Information Regulations Act 2004 –
Request No.19328

Thank you for your request for information about roadworks which we
received on 4^th August 2022. Your request has been considered under the
Environmental Information Regulations 2004.

We want to be as open as possible in answering requests, and to help
people obtain the information they are looking for. Unfortunately, in this
case the amount of information you have requested is very substantial.
Gathering it together would therefore be likely to involve a significant
cost and diversion of resources.  This could mean that we might have to
charge you for the work involved or even have to refuse the request under
exceptions in the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 covering
requests that are manifestly unreasonable or formulated too general a
manner.

The best way that we can help you therefore is to ask you to consider
whether you could narrow down your request to focus on the precise
information that you are seeking.  You could, for example:

• Be more specific about the time period covered by your request
• Explain more fully about the kind of information you are looking for
• Browse through material that has already been made publically
available on the authority’s website ([1]www.bedford.gov.uk) to see if
this would help you to identify more precise questions that we might
be able to answer at less cost.

Our work vary from filling a pothole to major resurfacing and improvement
schemes. To provide a cost breakdown for this work will take a lot of time
(over 30 hours) and may require payment. Therefore we ask if you can
confirm what specific information you are seeking?

If you are unable or unwilling to narrow down your request we will, of
course, consider it in accordance with our obligations under the
Environmental Information Regulations 2004.  However, we wanted to give
you an opportunity to reconsider your request and describe more precisely
the information you require.

Please let me know how you wish to proceed.

Yours sincerely,

Andrea Bechtle

Dear Andrea Bechtle,

Thank you for your response. To clarify, I would like just the information about roadworks carried out by the council rather than by other parties such as utilities.

Could you let me know if that narrows down the request significantly or if this would still require an excessive number of hours to collate?

Thank you for your help.

Yours sincerely,

Jamie Dixon
