Request for household recycling figures
Dear Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council,
Please provide the following recycling figures for the most recent financial year and the previous 4 years, split by year.
1. How many "whole bin wagon loads" of household recycling collections (from grey bins) were rejected at the recycling processing plant due to contamination and sent in their entirety to landfill?
2. What percentage of total bin wagon loads does this represent?
3. What was the total additional cost charged to the council for sending these rejected bin wagon loads to landfill? Please exclude any costs already included in the contract to cover rejected loads.
Yours faithfully,
Peter Quigley

Dear Fatima
Thank you for the information and the speedy response. Please will you confirm that your answer relates to the entire 5 years period (most recent year and previous 4 years)?
Yours sincerely
Peter Quigley
Dear Peter,
How it has worked for the last 5 years is that the collection vehicles unloaded in to a transfer station in Darwen, and any mixed rubbish was then removed, prior to the bulk loads going to a MRF for separation; hence, none of the entire loads of the collection vehicles have been rejected.
We now have a new contract however, and a new processor so this could change with an entire vehicle load being rejected.
I hope this answers your query.
Kind Regards,
Fatima Makken
