Dear University College London,

I am writing to request detailed information on specific subjects offered at your institution. For each subject, I would like to know the average score, median score, and the distribution of scores, including the number of students who scored below 40, between 40-50, 50-60, 60-70, and above 70. Additionally, I am interested in the total number of students enrolled in each subject.

Furthermore, I would appreciate insights into the composition of the final grade for each subject, such as the weightage of different components like timed exams, coursework, and any other relevant assessments.

Finance.FOI Requests, University College London

Dear Rui

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request of 9 March 2024.

We have considered your request for detailed information on course
statistics and grading components on specific subjects offered at UCL,
including:

• the average score, median score, and the distribution of scores,
including the number of students who scored below 40, between 40-50,
50-60, 60-70, and above 70;
• in the total number of students enrolled in each subject listed in
your request;
• insights into the composition of the final grade for each subject,
such as the weightage of different components like timed exams,
coursework, and any other relevant assessments.

We can confirm that we do hold information of the description specified in
your request, however, from our preliminary assessment, we estimate that
compliance with your request would exceed the appropriate costs limit
under Section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, which is
currently set at £450 (equivalent to 18 hours work) by virtue of the
Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees)
Regulations 2004.

Section 12(1) states that:

“Section 1(1) does not oblige a public authority to comply with a request
for information if the authority estimates that the cost of complying with
the request would exceed the appropriate limit.”

The Section 12(1) exemption applies because we estimate that to determine
whether we hold the requested information and then to locate, retrieve and
extract it, would take longer than 18 hours to complete. This is largely
because your request does not specify which years you would like to
receive the information about, and assembling the data on each subject
listed in your request would greatly exceed the 18 hour appropriate time
limit.

We are sorry we cannot provide the requested information to you.

You are free to use any information supplied for your own use, including
for non-commercial research purposes. The information may also be used for
the purposes of news reporting. However, any other type of re-use, for
example by publishing or issuing copies to the public, will require the
permission of the copyright owner.

If you are unhappy with our response to your request and wish to make a
complaint or request a review of our decision, please email
[1][email address]. Emails should include the words ‘Internal
Review’ in the subject and be marked For the Attention of the
Vice-President (Operations), alternatively you should write to:

Vice-President (Operations)

University College London

Gower Street

WC1E 6BT

Please note, complaints and requests for internal review received more
than two months after the initial decision will not be handled.

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you may
apply directly to the Information Commissioner by using the following web
address: [2]www.ico.org.uk/foicomplaints. You should do this within two
months of our final decision.

If you have any queries or concerns, please contact me using the details
provided in this letter and including the request reference number.

Dear Rui Zhang

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request of 9^th March 2024.
Apologies for the delay in responding to your request.

We have considered your request for information about the courses offered
at UCL over the period of 2020 to 2023.

We can confirm that we do hold some information of the description
specified in your request and this is embedded in your request below.

Your Request

• The mean score and median score achieved by students.

• From our preliminary assessment, we estimate that compliance with your
request would exceed the appropriate costs limit under Section 12 of
the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), which is currently set at
£450 (equivalent to 18 hours work) by virtue of the Freedom of
Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees)

The Section 12(1) exemption applies because we estimate that to determine
whether we hold the requested information and then to locate, retrieve and
extract it, would take longer that 18 hours to complete.  This is largely
because of the number of UCL students.

We are sorry we cannot provide the requested information to you.  We may
be able to provide some information if your request were to be refined in
some way, for instance if it were to cover specific courses.

If you would like this information, please do let us know of any specific
courses of interest.

• The number of students awarded a First Class honours.
• The number of students achieving an Upper Second Class (2:1) honours.
• The number of students falling into the Lower Second Class (2:2)
honours category.
• The count of students obtaining a Third Class honours

• This is exempt information on the basis of Section 21 of the FOIA –
information accessible to applicant by other means.  The
classifications awarded to undergraduate degree students are published
in Table S at [1]http://www.ucl.ac.uk/srs/statistics.

The Summer 2023 classifications are due to be added to the publication in
the next couple of months.
