Reportable conditions: Diabetes / weight loss medication usage overlap
Dear Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency,
Given that someone with a class 2 driving licence is not required to inform the DVLA about their diabetes if glycaemic control is achieved by diet alone as opposed to Diabetes treated by tablets or non-insulin injections which is a notifiable position, I note that Liraglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist once used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes is now prescribed for weight loss with people with a BMI of 35 or more.
Therefor I am asking if a class 2 licence holder who is a type 2 diabetic is prescribed Liraglutide on the grounds of weight loss (having met the BMI requirements) does this count as a reportable condition that the DVLA must be notified about or is it still treated as coming under the auspices of “being treated by diet alone ?
Yours faithfully,
Kurr Kidman
Thank you for your recent request.
Providing the drug is not being used for Diabetes treatment and only
weight loss and as it does not cause hypoglycaemia, then DVLA would not
need to be notified about the use.
