Replacement street trees planting programme
Dear Merton Borough Council,
I was informed in April by your street trees team that you have identified 2000 vacant tree pits in the borough, and have a replacement programme which started in Winter 2023 and may take a few seasons to complete.
Can you please:
- Provide me with the locations of all of the 2000 tree pits on a map which is detailed enough for me to zoom into and identify the precise locations.
- Share the planting time planned for each of these pits, by which I mean which pits were given new trees in winter 2023/24, which are planned for new trees in winter 2024/25, and which are planned for new trees for all subsequent years until the 2000 pits are all replanted.
Yours faithfully,
Sandra Vogel

Dear Sandra Vogel,
Freedom of Information Act 2000 / Environmental Information Regulations
2004 Information request
Thank you for your Freedom of Information Request.
We have now considered your information request as set out below.
Your Question:
I was informed in April by your street trees team that you have identified
2000 vacant tree pits in the borough and have a replacement programme
which started in Winter 2023 and may take a few seasons to complete.
Can you please:
- Provide me with the locations of all the 2000 tree pits on a map which
is detailed enough for me to zoom into and identify the precise locations.
Our Response:
Please see the attached Excel Spreadsheet showing the Vacant Tree Pit
locations 2024 across Merton that we shared with you already linked to FOI
20269
The locations have been provided for you as both OS Grid Ref / Longitude
and Latitude and What3Words locations for each tree.
Your Question:
Can you please:
- Share the planting time planned for each of these pits, by which I mean
which pits were given new trees in winter 2023/24, which are planned for
new trees in winter 2024/25, and which are planned for new trees for all
subsequent years until the 2000 pits are all replanted.
Our Response:
Trees Planted Winter 2023/24: The data for 2023/24 planting season is not
relevant to the above request as the Vacant Tree Pit locations shared was
not used to compile Tree Planted Winter 2023/24.
Trees Planted Winter 2024/25: The data for 2024/25 planting season is
still in the planning phase and the council will be using the Vacant Tree
Pit Locations List shared and the potential 500 replacement planting
locations will be plotted by September 2024 and all trees should be
planted between October 2024 and March 2025 and therefore uploaded onto
Ezytreev once all trees are planted so should be available by May 2025,
please be aware that this time frame may change linked to the following
factor; tree supply / contractor availability / service connections /
traffic permits.
If you have any queries or concerns about this, please contact me.
If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request or wish to
appeal against the decision to exempt any part of your request, you should
request an Internal Review at [1][Merton Borough Council request email]
or write into Freedom of Information team, Merton Council, Civic Centre,
Morden, SM4 5DX.
If you escalate to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) without
following the council’s internal review process, the ICO will refer you
back to the council to enable the correct process to be followed.
You can also appeal to the Information Commissioner at:

There is no charge for making an appeal.
