Replacement of Sign-age
Dear Northumbria Police,
I am requesting the following information under the Freedom of Information Act.
1) Please provide the total cost of replacing the sign-age on every Northumbria Police station with the new square police sign (shown here: http://www.123rf.com/photo_1567147_polic...)
The total cost should be broken down to include, but not be limited to: materials, labour, and removal/disposal of old sign-age.
2) Please provide the reasoning for replacing the highly visible signs with little squares that can't be seen from distance. What considerations were made when deciding to carry out this work?
Yours faithfully,
Mr Hedley

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom
of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')
Thank you for your email dated 8 October 2011 in which you made a request
for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.
As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of
access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police),
subject to certain limitations and exemptions.
You asked:
1. Please provide the total cost of replacing the sign-age on every
Northumbria Police station with the new square police sign. The total
cost should be broken down to include, but not be limited to: materials,
labour, and removal/disposal of old sign-age.
2. Please provide the reasoning for replacing the highly visible
signs with little squares that cant be seen from distance. What
considerations were made when deciding to carry out this work?
In response:
We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I
provide a response for your attention.
Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the
Finance and Corporate Communications Departments of Northumbria Police. I
can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria
Police.
I have decided to disclose the located information to you in as follows.
1. Contractors preliminaries £13,329.74
Removal / disposal of old signs £1,078.62
New signs (labour + materials) £34,988.78
Electrical work and ducts, trenching etc. £19,585.16
2. As part of the Citizen Focus Agenda, a decision was taken in
December 2006 for signs to be fitted at all stations with less than 24/7
opening, to give full details of actual opening hours and those of
alternative offices, including directions, if closed.
As part of this work and in order to improve visibility, signage
across the Northumbria Police force area was standardised. The
checkerboard design is a widely used and recognised symbol both
internationally and nationally for police, although not all forces choose
to use it.
The information we have supplied to you is likely to contain intellectual
property rights of Northumbria Police. Your use of the information must
be strictly in accordance with the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988
(as amended) or such other applicable legislation. In particular, you
must not re-use this information for any commercial purpose.
How to complain
If you are unhappy with our decision or do not consider that we have
handled your request properly and we are unable to resolve this issue
informally, you are entitled to make a formal complaint to us under our
complaints procedure which is attached.
If you are still unhappy after we have investigated your complaint and
reported to you the outcome, you may complain directly to the Information
Commissioner’s Office and request that they investigate to ascertain
whether we have dealt with your request in accordance with the Act.
Yours sincerely
