Replace BRP Application Vs Citizenship Application

Mondweep Chakravorty made this Freedom of Information request to Home Office This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Home Office should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Home Office,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I applied a replacement BRP on behalf of my daughter as she is a minor and the 5 year duration on her original Indefinite Leave to Remain BRP expires later this month. The application was made at the start of Dec 2017. Subsequently biometrics were provided on 20th Dec.

She has been eligible for British citizenship for many a year now - it is just that I hadn't applied. I am a British citizen as well.

When I applied for the replacement BRP, my understanding was that it would be with us in around 6 weeks. Can I check if that is possible? If it were to be the usual 6 months lead time, I might as well have applied for her citizenship. Currently her passport etc are with you and so none in the family can make any realistic travel plans. Could I therefore seek your views about how our situation can be improved. For example would it be possible for me to apply for her citizenship whilst her replacement BRP is being processed.

If you share me a direct email, I can share specific related to the case.

I have called your helpline but they don't seem to have the systems in place to provide meaningful information. For example they cannot even use the Home Office case reference numbers to find current status of the application. It has been very frustrating - and to an extent I feel misled that the application forms don't spell out the service standard clearly. Even looking at your website (https://www.gov.uk/government/organisati...) , it isn't clear what the max service standard for an activity like replacing an existing BRP card for someone with Indefinite Leave to Remain is.

Thank you for your assistance and consideration.

Yours faithfully,
Mondweep Chakravorty
