Dear Elena Martyn,
Thank you for your information request. Taking your questions in order:
1. to 3. We do not hold a complete, searchable record of place of origin
of our collections, but the following information may be helpful to you:
place of origin or production is recorded within our Collections
Management System for museum objects, but not for Archives or Library
items. Within the object collection, 50% (619,000) do not have a recorded
production place – these are records which are currently being developed.
Of the remaining 50%, 27% (327,000) are of UK origin, 16% (200,800) of
other European origin and 7% (90,300) of origin elsewhere in the world.
Within the 50% with no place of production recorded, a further 7% of the
collection are within our Asian collections.
4. We have received the following seven requests for repatriation in the
last ten years, including both official requests and enquiries from
private individuals:
o 2007, Germany
o 2008, Ethiopia
o 2010, Germany
o 2010, Turkey
o 2013, Turkey
o 2017, Wales
o 2017, England
5. One of the claims listed resulted in the return of a group of objects:
o Percentage: 14.3%
o Three Meissen pieces (C.23-1984, C.14-1984, C.137-1993), restituted on
the basis of the 2009 Holocaust Act
([1]https://www.gov.uk/government/publicatio...)
6. The following objects have been repatriated since January 2000:
o Toro Monstrance (M.367PART-1956), returned to Spain on the basis of a
long-term loan agreement
o Three Meissen pieces (C.23-1984, C.14-1984, C.137-1993), restituted on
the basis of the 2009 Holocaust Act
