Repair to the Grade 2* Saracens Head Southwell
Dear Newark and Sherwood District Council,
Re Saracens Head Southwell
1. When was first contact made with either the owner, Greene King plc, or leaseholder (or both) expressing concern about the condition of the building ?
2. Has and if so when did Newark and Sherwood District Council issued a formal notice requiring the current planned works and to whom was that notice addressed?
3 How many times has Newark and Sherwood District Council contacted Greene King and/ or the leaseholder requesting repairs or expressing concern about the North Range , and what are the dates of these contacts?
4. Was the Newark and Sherwood District Council aware of the circumstances surrounding the Covid Repairs grant made by Historic England for repair of the North Range and the eligibility terms for the grant? Was the Newark and Sherwood District Council involved in this grant? Was the grant made at the request of the owner or leaseholder and to whom was the grant paid? Have any other grants been paid, offered or requested towards maintenance of the North Range or any other part of the hotel?
5 Is Newark and Sherwood District Council aware of Historic England's grant conditions on the repair of the North Range or is Greene King and/ or the leaseholder contributing and if so what are these conditions?
6. Once the repairs are completed, what could the response of Newark and Sherwood District Council be so that the North Range can be removed from the concerns list of the Council or will the history of neglect of the building justify it being retained on that register?
7. Has Greene King and/or the leaseholder agreed or offered any ongoing arrangements that give Newark and Sherwood District Council any greater level of confidence that in future the building will be better maintained and protected ? What are those arrangements?
Yours faithfully,
Peter Harris

5
No, this information is held by Historic England. They can be contacted
via their website:
https://historicengland.org.uk/about/wha...
6.
Although repairs are welcomed, continued vacancy could justify retention
on the Heritage at Risk (H@R) register. However, this will be a decision
for Historic England as they maintain the H@R Register. Therefore you will
need to contact Historic England if you require more information, see Q5
for details.
7.
Work is due to start on site very shortly. This gives us some level of
comfort. We will continue to engage with both land owner and tenant to
ensure that this important building is properly maintained. Historic
England are also monitoring the situation.
