Religious faith of Judges

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Judicial Appointments Commission should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Judicial Appointments Commission,

Do you hold a register of the different religious faiths of the
Judges operating within the judiciary?

Yours faithfully,

Mr. Smith

Dear Mr Smith,

Thank you for your email of 9 September 2015.

Please note that the Judicial Appointments Commission only selects candidates for judicial office on merit, through fair and open competition, from the widest range of eligible candidates.

We do not hold the full information requested. However since 2009, as a producer of Official Statistics the JAC publishes the statistics for each exercise which includes a breakdown of gender, ethnicity, professional background and age of candidates at the various stages throughout the process. This is published on the JAC website and can be accessed via the link below:

https://jac.judiciary.gov.uk/jac-officia...

Statistics for sexual orientation and religious beliefs are available from June 2014.

To obtain the full information requested, I would suggest you submit your request to the Data Access and Compliance Unit of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) via the online form, available through the following link:

If you are unhappy with this response, as part of its obligations under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), the JAC has an independent review process. You may request an internal review, which will be carried out by someone who did not make this original decision, and they will re-assess how the JAC handled the original request. If you wish to request an internal review, please send an e-mail within two months of this response to:

[email address]

If you remain dissatisfied after the internal review, under Section 50 of the FOIA you have the right to apply to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
