Dear Southern Water Services

I note thatSouthern Water is a risk management authority and has the following flood risk management functions..

Food Risk to Communities – Swale
• To maintain a register of properties at risk of flooding due to a hydraulic overload in the sewerage network;
• To undertake capacity improvements to alleviate prioritised sewer flooding problems;
• To provide, maintain and operate systems of public sewers and works for the purpose of effectually draining their operative area;
• To co-operate with other relevant authorities in the exercise of their flood and coastal erosion risk management functions.

The matter of frequent apparent contamination from your sewage treatment plant on Faversham Creek greatly concerns me. The recent flooding is but one example that appeared to release contaminated foam.

Please will you tell me how many sewage release incidents have been recorded and also explain what sampling methods are used to ensure that faecal matter does not contaminate Faversham creek?
Is routine bacteriological sampling carried out and, if so, how may I access these records?
Given the extensive number of new houses being built, what measures are you taking to ensure that you have sufficient capacity to accommodate the extra sewage that will result?
