The request was successful.

Dear General Medical Council,

Recently the Plab 2 fee was hiked by 80 percent. You have mentioned on website it is based on a review. Could you please kindly explain more for such a steep hike or make the cost review public. Also please share details of previous hikes- when it was done and how much was hiked.

Please share details of costs involved in conducting a Plab 2 exam and how it has changed so steeply from the last hike before the current one.

Yours faithfully,

Joseph Kurien

Dear Mr Kurien

Thank you for your email. Your request has been considered in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).

All the information you require is available within the papers for the 30 September 2015 GMC Council meeting. The relevant paper is available via this link: http://www.gmc-uk.org/09___Income_genera.... Details regarding the PLAB test fees are available at Annex A. GMC Council papers are available at: http://www.gmc-uk.org/about/council/coun....

As the information you ask for regarding the increase in PLAB test fees is already publically available, we are not obliged to provide it under the FOIA. This is because it is subject to the exemption listed at section 21 of the FOIA. Section 21 of the FOIA applies where the information is already reasonably accessible to the requester.

Even though I’ve provided you with details of where to find the information, I still need to mention that you can appeal my decision to apply the above exemption. If you would like to do so, please set out your reasons and write to Julian Graves, Information Access Manager, at [email address]. You can also appeal to the Information Commissioner, the regulator of the FOIA and DPA – we can provide more details about this if you need them.

If you have any further queries regarding this request please contact me.

Yours sincerely

Dear Elizabeth Hiley (0161 923 6314),

Thanks for sharing the link which is hard to find in the announcement that was made on website regarding change of plab2 fees. I am not fully satisfied with the reply since the review only shows the current estimated cost per candidate giving Plab 2. You have not shared details of previous hikes and what was the cost then . Still it remains obscure the reason for such a steep hike in expenditure incurred per candidate per Plab 2 exam . As seen on website the pattern of Plab 2 is going to change in September 2016 which can be a reason to change fees . But its not a reason for people giving exam till the change happens to pay the new fee.

Yours sincerely,

Joseph Kurien
