Refugees from Africa

The request was successful.

Dear St Helens Metropolitan Borough Council,

I wish to know have we taken in or are taking in any Migrants from Africa?
Whilst many neighbouring Borough's are taking in a fair share (and quite correctly so) I wish to know the numbers of how many (if any) have been housed and made homes in our Borough & what future plans are in place to increase this.

Without straying from my FOI request, St Helens to a neutral observer appears mono-ethnic and not encouraging of any form of diversity which is not right in contemporary multi-cultural Great Britain.
I hope as part of the Liverpool City Region that we diversify as our big city neighbour does.

Yours faithfully,

Robert Toone

St.Helens Council, St Helens Metropolitan Borough Council

Dear Mr Toone,

Thank you for your recent Freedom of Information Request regarding
refugees originating from Africa supported within St Helens. St Helens is
currently participating in two Refugee Resettlement Schemes as follows:

* Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Programme
* Resettlement of Vulnerable Children Schem

The latter scheme is open to children and their families considered to
be at risk, who originate from the Middle East and North Africa regions.
Families are allocated to St Helens by the Home Office on the basis of
vulnerability rather than country of origin. St Helens has met it's
initial resettlement pledge to resettle 60 individuals and has made an
increased pledge to resettle 60 further individuals. To date no refugees
resettled within St Helens have been from Africa.

St Helens are also participating in the Home Office Asylum Seeker
dispersal programme and have met the initial pledge of 30 properties and
have made a commitment to increase this to a total of 60 properties. This
scheme is the responsibility of the Home Office and the Local Authority
does not hold information about the nationality of Asylum Seekers resident
within the Borough.

I hope this answers your query

St Helens Council
