Recycling collections and mixed refuse

The request was successful.

Dear Croydon Borough Council,

Please can you explain the following:

i) Where is household recyclable waste from the blue bins taken to be recycled?

ii) Are all recyclable items actually recycled or do certain items go to landfill? If so, which items?

iii) Why do you provide separate bins for recyclable waste and only accept bins with recyclables separated, yet they are immediately mixed together when collected in the same bin lorries?

Regards

Sarah H

Dear FOI,

Both names may be required as a technicality, however I've not been asked for this by any other public body and therefore it serves no purpose that I can see. As a failing/bankrupt council it would be useful for you to focus on customer care and not try to place barriers in the way of those making legitimate enquiries.

It is Harris, so you can now continue - please ensure you keep to the statutory timeframes in your response.

Regards,

Sarah H

Dear Sarah Harris

Request FOI/8060

Further to your request received on 14/08/2023, I confirm that the Council
has now considered your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
For ease of reference, I will now address each of your questions in turn.
/ The information you have requested is as follows:

i) Where is household recyclable waste from the blue bins taken to be
recycled?

Our Blue lidded wheelie bins are for the collection of Paper and Card.
This material is kept separate and tipped at the Stubbs Mead transfer
station and is then sent to UPM Kymmene in Shotton for onward processing.

ii) Are all recyclable items actually recycled or do certain items go to
landfill? If so, which items?

Yes - Our recyclates are collected and processed separately from our
general waste . All waste collected as recycling is sent for processing
where it is treated and processed as a recyclate. It is important to note
that this subject to the level of contamination and offending loads may be
rejected and sent to an Energy Recovery Facility (ERF).

iii) Why do you provide separate bins for recyclable waste and only accept
bins with recyclables separated, yet they are immediately mixed together
when collected in the same bin lorries?

Our recycling vehicles are twin stream which means that the rear
compaction section of the vehicle is divided into two separate
compartments allowing for the crew to collect both food waste and dry
recycling material at the same time and keeping them separate for further
processing.
