Recycling and food waste bags

We're waiting for Abdul Hai to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear Tower Hamlets Borough Council,

Can you tell me?
1. Who was consulted on the new recycling and and food waste bags policy?
2. What feedback did you get from the consultation?
3. How do you decide which properties are classed as what for example high rise?
4. What do you deem to be someone's yearly supply of those bags?
5. What happens if they need more?
6. Have you done any assessment on the possible impact on the environment?
7. How much are you likely to save yearly?
8. What arrangements will there be for people who can't go to the Idea Stores?

Yours faithfully,

Abdul Hai

I only learned about this from the following email.

Dear Mr. Hai

Thank you for your email

Please note that the council has introduced some changes to the delivery of recycling and food waste bags.

Please note the following:

Residents living in high-rise properties (blocks of flats) can collect one year supply of recycling sacks from their local Idea Store. This is available at certain dates and times only.

Please see attached distribution schedule for details.

All other low rise properties will receive a ‘blanket delivery’, with enough sacks to last a whole year.

All ad-hoc deliveries for pink recycling bags and food waste starch liners has been stopped. Residents will no longer be able to request bags via Streetline

To find your nearest Idea store please click on the links below:

http://www.ideastore.co.uk/idea-stores

An outreach team will be at the idea stores to provide advice and information.

You will need to provide proof of your address

All other collection points such as libraries, community centres and one stop shops will no longer stock any bags and starch liners. This will be reviewed in the near future.

This is the latest policy.

Good morning Abdul

The council is currently reviewing the provision of recycling bags to residents due to concerns that the previous system of distribution was being misused. Large quantities of bags were being used for purposes other than recycling. However through the review process and listening to feedback from residents, we have recognised that some of the changes restricted access to the service and made recycling difficult.

We have reconsidered our approach and as of Wednesday 25th January 2017, recycling bags and starch liners will be made available every Wednesday and Saturday from any Idea Store, Cubitt Town and Bethnal Green Libraries. Residents will be able to collect a roll of recycling bags by showing proof of their address such as a utility bill, council tax bill, council tax bill, bank statement or driving licence.

If you live in a flat and have access to a large purple recycling bin, you can place recycling directly into the bin. If you live in a kerb side property and have a purple wheelie bin you can also place recycling items directly without the need to place them in a recycling bag first. If you do not have access to a bin, you can use clear bags as an alternative to the pink bags provided by the council.

Over the coming weeks we will provide clear advice to all residents on how they can improve recycling.

If you have any more questions regarding this matter please email recycling@towerhamlets.gov.uk
