Recruits from ethnic minorities (not including White minorities)

J Roberts made this Freedom of Information request to British Army Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was successful.

Dear British Army,

1. For the financial year 2022/23, please provide the number of (i) officers and (ii) other ranks recruited.

2. Break down these two numbers to show the number who were (i) White and (ii) from other ethnic categories (not including White minorities).

3. Please provide high-level information evaluating your success in recruiting individuals from ethnic minorities in 2022/23 eg reports or briefing papers.

Yours faithfully,

J Roberts

Dear Army Sec-Group (MULTIUSER),

Thank you for your response and the link. I found a lot of useful information. For example, the 'UK Armed Forces Biannual Diversity Statistics: April 2023' (Updated 5 October 2023) includes:

'4.2 Intake and Outflow

UK Regular Forces

Ethnic minorities (excluding white minorities) personnel accounted for 9.7 per cent of Intake into the UK Regular Forces in the 12 months to 31 March 2023, see Figure 11. In the 12 months ending 31 March 2023....'

and,

'Figure 9: Ethnicity of UK Regular and Future Reserves 2020 Personnel as at 1 April 2023

Regular:

RN/RM 5.1%
Army 14.8%
RAF 3.7%'

And below Figure 9:

'At 1 April 2023, ethnic minorities (excluding white minorities) personnel represented:

3.0 per cent of Officers and 11.8 per cent of Other Ranks in the UK Regular Forces.'

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics...

However, I can't pinpoint the specific information requested. I found the figure of 9. 7% ('Intake into the UK Regular Forces'), but this is not enough.

Question 1

'For the financial year 2022/23, please provide the number of (i) officers and (ii) other ranks recruited.'

It would appear that the answer to Q1 can be obtained by extracting the army figures for (i) officers and (ii) other ranks used to calculate the figure of 9.7%.

Can you pinpoint where I can find the information requested?

Yours sincerely,

J Roberts

Good afternoon,

All the information requested cab be found in the Biannual Diversity Statistics: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics...

Question 1
'For the financial year 2022/23, please provide the number of (i) officers and (ii) other ranks recruited.'

Please open the excel spreadsheet. Intake to the UK Regular Army in FY2022/23 by Officer / Other Rank can be found in Table 8 of the Biannual (cell AT62 for Officers (540) and AT70 for OR (5820)).
This is then broken down into ethnicities in the rows below, which helps to answer Q2 of the request. Actual numbers and percentages are both provided.

Sincerely,
