Dear East of England Ambulance Service,

According to your "turnaround plan", you were going to recruit 149 paramedics and 82 specialist paramedics - a total of 231 extra paramedic staff.

To date you have only had a net increase this year of 4 (four) paramedics. When taking into account last years figures, you currently have 48 fewer paramedics than you did at the end of 2011.

You also apparently need to recruit 79 more specialist paramedics.

In effect, since the start of 2013, you have recruited just 7 out of the 231 paramedics you said you were going to.

Yours sincerely,

J Lowe

Dear East of England Ambulance Service

I note further that in an article in the Eastern Daily Press on 31st August 2013, the Trust claimed to have "recruited 160 emergency care assistants and paramedics".

Your stated plan was to recruit 96 emergency care assistants (something Anthony Marsh advised against), so are you now admitting that you have recruited 153 of these staff to go along with the 7 paramedics / specialist paramedics, or are your claims false?

Yours sincerely,

J Lowe

FOI, East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust

Dear J Lowe

We have recruited all the 96 ECAs outlined in the Turnaround Plan and are currently recruiting the ‘backfill’ for the ECAs who will commence the ECA to Technician career pathway early next year. We currently have 73 confirmed and accepted offers of employment to paramedics. 35 of these paramedics have already started with the Trust with further scheduled to commence over the next two months. Thus the 160 you refer to in all likelihood relates to our combined ECA and Paramedic recruitment.

Kind regards

Dear East of England Ambulance Service,

According to the figures you quote, you have recruited 96 ECAs and 35 paramedics. That makes a total of 131.

Clearly a large number of paramedics have also left the Trust in that time meaning net paramedic recruitment is virtually nil.

Why don't the figures you gave to the press add up?

Are you actually recruiting many more ECAs than you're letting on as you can't fill the 231 paramedic vacancies you said you would?

I will await your reply.

Yours sincerely,

J Lowe

FOI, East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust

Dear J Lowe

Further to your email dated 23rd November, I can confirm that the number of ECAs recruited in relation to the Trust’s Turnaround Plan has remained as 96.
