Reception class numbers

Kenton Bush made this Freedom of Information request to Oxfordshire County Council

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Oxfordshire County Council,

My son took up a place at Longcot and Fernham school this year. I was surprised to find there are 21 new admissions when the stated number is 15!

This is a 23% increase on last years admission of 17 and a massive 40% increase on the official admission size of 15 pupils!

It is obvious his education may suffer as a result.

I am taking my info from figures supplied by school and this document http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/cms/sites/...

It is interesting to note the document I referred to is wrong as it states admission numbers were 17 for 2013/14. Have OCC any plans to correct this wrong information on their website?

Longcot school is claiming this is a "one off" increase to help OCC address school place shortages. This raises additional concerns as it is unlikely the school will see the need to provide additional equipment to cater for an "exceptional" year. Instead they will just make do with that they have and squeeze in the 4 extra pupils to existing resources. I was "jokingly" told they couldn't all sit down together in the class room. Whilst not true I don't think it was far from the truth!

I have contacted Watchfield school and been told they have spare places this year, so it would appear there was no need for OCC to apply pressure to Longcot to take extra pupils.

For each OCC primary school can you provide me with following as clearly the info you have published on the web is incorrect:

- number of pupils admitted to the reception year 2011/12.
- number of pupils admitted to the reception year 2012/13.
- number of pupils admitted to the reception year 2013/14.
- the planned/stated "admission number" for 2011/12
- the planned/stated "admission number" for 2012/13
- the planned/stated "admission number" for 2013/14
- the planned/stated "admission number" for 2014/15

Where parents have chosen not to send their child to school until they reach 5 I would like them included in the numbers, as the fact that didn't start in September doesn't mean a place wasn't allocated to them.

What additional resources have been allocated to each school that has been "forced" to take more than the usual admission number of pupils for each of these years.

From this info I can identify where over allocation has taken place and how fairly it was spread around schools.

Thks for your assistance in understanding what pressures are on OCC primary schools.

Yours faithfully,

Kenton Bush

Dear Mr Bush

Thank you for your request of 13th September in which you asked for
information about primary school admissions.

Please see our response below:

The council receives a statistical return from each school each October:
PLASC. This is the data set which most closely matches the number of
pupils admitted to each primary school. The data for 2013 have not yet
been collected.

The spread sheet ~APAD4.xls contains the Published Admission Numbers for
2011, 2012 and 2013; these are the number of places which it was planned
to make available. The PANs for 2014 are on the Council's website -see the
'AN' in each school's entry in the admissions prospectuses (NB although
'2012' features in the link they are the 2014 figures).

Secondary:

The data on the council's website to which you referred ("as clearly the
info you have published on the web is incorrect") relate to the number of
places allocated on the 16^th April; they do not include any further
places allocated subsequently.
