Reapplication to History BA
Dear Durham University,
I would be grateful if you would provide the number and percentage of second-time applicants with the achieved grades of AAA* who gained a place to study History. By second-time, I am referring to candidates who failed to gain a place at Durham the previous year, but are reapplying. Statistics for either 2017 or 2018 would be preferable please.
Yours faithfully,
Cecelia Knight

Dear Ms Knight
Thank you for your request for information from Durham University.
Colleagues have provided the information below in response to your
questions.
I would be grateful if you would provide the number and percentage of
second-time applicants with the achieved grades of AAA* who gained a place
to study History. By second-time, I am referring to candidates who failed
to gain a place at Durham the previous year, but are reapplying.
Statistics for either 2017 or 2018 would be preferable please.
The University confirms that it holds the information you have requested.
However, it could be possible to identify the individual(s) concerned and
therefore the information is personal data as defined by the Data
Protection Act 1998. The University therefore refuses your request under
section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
The number of students meeting the criteria is too small for us to
disclose the outcome of their applications, but as general advice we are
not always able to make offers to applicants who meet the entry
requirements for our most competitive programmes. We consider a range of
factors when deciding whether to make an offer including the personal
statement and other attainment (e.g. GCSE grades), and fairness to the
entire pool of applicants. The requester should also note that some
applicants choose to re-sit one or more A levels, so conditional offers
will sometimes be made on the basis of achieved and predicted grades. If
an applicant has a strong interest in studying History at Durham and meets
the entry requirements, we would advise that they apply. They are also
welcome to contact our enquiries team for advice on their application.
If you are dissatisfied with the University’s response to your freedom of
information request, you can ask us to internally review our handling of
your request, including the application of any exemptions applied. To do
this, please email [1][Durham University request email] or write to:
Information Governance Unit
The Palatine Centre
Stockton Road
Durham

Please state the grounds on which you wish the decision to be reviewed and
enclose any other information that may be useful in considering the matter
further. We aim to inform you of our decision within 20 working days from
the date your request for internal review is received.
If you are not satisfied with the results of the internal review you may
apply to the Information Commissioner's Office for an independent review.
