Re-Application Statistics for Natural Sciences

Edward Hammond made this Freedom of Information request to St John's College, Cambridge

This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

We're waiting for Edward Hammond to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear St John’s College, Cambridge,

It would be wonderful if you could provide the following information for any re-applicants for the Natural Sciences Tripos, at St John's, between 2015 and the current application cycle.

a) Interview?
b) Offer?
c) Number of A* A Levels
d) Average UMS Score
e) Average Natural Science Admissions Assessment Scores
f) Any commonalities in the way successful re-applicants spend their gap year

I am aware that the college may not be able to differentiate between those applicants who were previously rejected and are re-applying, and those applicants who are applying for the first time after receiving A Level grades. If such is the case, it would still be wonderful if you could provide the information above for any post-A Level applicants.

Yours faithfully,

Edward Hammond

Freedom of Information Officer, St John's College, Cambridge

Dear Mr Hammond,

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request concerning statistics
for Natural Sciences applications.

To comply with your precise request would require the processing of the
individual personal data of applicants for a purpose other than that for
which it was obtained and would therefore conflict with the Data
Protection Principles. However, the following information is supplied
which we hope will prove useful.

The general advice on re-application is to apply to a different Cambridge
College so it is impossible to say how many of our unsuccessful
applications went on to apply again to Cambridge and of course we also do
not know if any of our candidates applied to a different College in a
previous round. It is likely that any post-qualification candidate who
meets the standard offer level for Natural Sciences (A*A*A) in the
recommended subjects and performed well in the Pre-Interview Assessment
would be interviewed.

In both the 2017 and 2018 Admissions Rounds (for entry in October 2018/19
and in October 2019/20) there were fewer than five post qualification
applicants who received an offer.

We no longer hold information on unsuccessful applicants from 2015 and
2016 cycles.

If you are dissatisfied with my response you may seek an internal review
in writing setting out the grounds for review. It will be dealt with by a
College Officer. Should you not be satisfied with the outcome of the
review, you will have a right of appeal to the Information Commissioner by
writing to him at Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House, Water
Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.

Yours sincerely
