Dear Southern Water Services Limited,

Please confirm the following:

1. Why are we being charged for sewage cleansing and treatment, when reports recently have confirmed that Southern Water pumps its raw sewage into rivers?

2. Will we get the money back, that we have been charged for by Southern Water, for the cleansing and treatment of raw sewage from Southern Water, as Southern Water has confirmed it pumps its raw sewage into rivers?

3. What are the current plans of Southern Water regarding the treatment and cleansing of raw sewage?

Thank You.

Regards.

Yours faithfully,

Re: Sewage releases

Dear George,

Thank you for your email received on 28 October 2022, regarding releases
from storm overflows and investments. I appreciate you getting in touch
with us so that we can explain why we have storm overflows and the work
we’re doing to reduce their use.

I know that any untreated sewage going into our seas and rivers is
unacceptable. That is why we’re working hard to stop that happening,
investing and taking action now.

We’ve set up a dedicated task force who are responsible for delivering
five [1]Pathfinder projects in the next two years, trialling new
techniques and partnerships to manage surface water runoff in communities.
What we learn from our projects will help inform our regional plan to
significantly reduce storm overflows by 2030. For more information, please
visit our [2]Storm Overflow page.

We have also been provided all customers a reduction in wastewater charges
since 01 April 2020, more details can be found
[3]here.

Whilst we fully understand your strength of feeling, our services and the
right to charge for those services is a statutory right contained with the
Water Industry Act 1991. Our Charges Scheme stipulates how and when
payment for our services must be made. The services that are provided and
for which a charge is made are the provision of clean drinking water and
the removal of wastewater from customer’s properties. No further rebates,
refunds or compensation will be provided due to Storm Overflow Releases.

I’ve also included some additional information that I think could be
useful for you.

After you’ve read through the material, if you have additional questions
or would like further advice, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.
Our contact details are below and if you include my name then I’ll make
sure I continue to oversee your query.

Yours sincerely,

Chris Dixon

Investment

Since privatisation, we’ve invested £10 billion into improve services for
our customers and we’re investing a further £2 billion (equivalent to
approximately £1,000 per household) between 2020 and 2025, to
significantly improve our environmental performance and assets.

We haven’t paid our shareholders any external dividends since 2017.
Instead, all profits are being invested back in the business.

Other investment includes:

·       Invested a record £610m in 2021 to increase network and treatment
capacity and in 2022 we plan to spend a further £600m.

·       Spent £65m on maintenance to improve resilience of the system to
better cope with adverse weather.

·       Installed 22,000 sewer sensors in the first full-scale roll-out of
sewer digitisation to prevent pollution and flooding from network
blockages.

·       Introduced predictive analytics into our control room to prevent
equipment failures across our network of 40,000km pipes, 367 treatment
works and 3,476 pumping stations.

Dear [email address].u,

Thank you for this information regarding your future plans.

However, it is in the Public Domain, that funding has already been provided in previous years from the Government to all Water Companies to ensure sewage is treated correctly at all times.

My FOIA enquiry is specifically about Southern Water's record to date.

Kindly therefore explain why so much raw sewage has been and continues to be pumped into our rivers by Southern Water, when Southern Water has already had the required funding to treat it all correctly.

Yours sincerely,

George Tsigarides
