Thank you for your email of 16 January. Please see the below response
from our technical team:
· There was a recent permit variation at this site. Can you confirm
whether iGAS has complied to the changes?
o In December 2019, IGas Energy Enterprise Limited applied to the
Environment Agency for a permit to allow them to receive, accumulate and
dispose of radioactive waste in the form of naturally occurring
radioactive material at the Singleton site. This application is still
being assessed and the permit has not yet been issued.
· Can you please say if NORM is currently being generated and from
which strata at Singleton?
o The Environment Agency do not hold this information.
Please be advised that because we do not hold this information, we are
refusing your request and, as a public body, are required to provide a
formal letter of notice (attached) that gives an explanation for the
reasons for this refusal.
· Can you please say what form of well stimulation has been used to
generate NORM at the facility?
o Well stimulation is not permitted at this site, and the applications
to vary the two environmental permits at the site do not include any
request to carry out well stimulation at the site. Well stimulation is not
used to generate NORM.
· What is currently being done with the accumulated solid
o If we issue a permit to the operator, it will allow accumulation of
solid radioactive waste that has arisen from NORM industrial activities
for a period of up to 3 months. The waste can then be transferred to any
person or company who holds an environmental permit for the receipt and
disposal of low level radioactive waste (LLW). From there, the waste can
either be disposed of by incineration or landfill or it can be treated.
· Does IGAS have a bond to transport the radioactive material off
o The Environment Agency does not regulate the transportation of
radioactive material. This is the responsibility of the Office of Nuclear
Regulation. Please follow this link for further information:
· Can you confirm there is currently a reinjection well and to which
depth it goes?
o There is a reinjection well for produced water at the site. The depth
of the well is 914 mbgl.
· If there is a reinjection well can you please tell me the age?
o The well was installed in February 1996, making it 24 years old.
· Can you please list how many site visits the EA has made from
o The Environment Agency has made 5 site visit between 2015 and 2020.
