Radiation levels.

Dave Whyte made this Freedom of Information request to Ministry of Defence

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Ministry of Defence,

I served at Christmas Island in 1958 whilst three hydrogen bombs and two atomic bombs were being tested. I am informed by the Ministry of defence that I would have received more radiation had I remained at home.

For the Ministry of Defence to make such statements, they must have information to back up their stories.

Can you please supply me with the following information relating to the year 1958!

1. What were the Minimum and Maximum radiation levels recorded at Christmas Island during 1958?

2. What were the Minimum and Maximum radiation levels recorded at Kirkcaldy in Fife (my home town) during 1958?

3. If you do not have the radiation levels requested, is this an admission I was misinformed when told, by you, I would have received more radiation had I remained at home?

Yours faithfully,

Dave Whyte

Dear Ministry of Defence,

This delay comes as no surprise. When a Nuclear veteran mentions the word 'RADIATION' the Ministry of Defence run away like the proverbial 'Frightened Rabbits'.
If they had nothing to hide they would answer the questions honestly.

Yours faithfully,

Dave Whyte

Dear Ministry of Defence,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Ministry of Defence's handling of my FOI request 'Radiation levels.'.

Under the rules regulating FOI questions: I should have received an answer by the 22nd July. This, I have not received, nor have I been given any reasons for the default. Additionally, I have not been notified (which is obligitory) when the Ministry of Defence are likely to answer the questions posed.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address:

Dear Dave, Its seems strange, doesnt it that an MOD test some 54 years ago doesnt have records available for something that should have been basic safety data? My father served on Christmas Island in Operation Grapple, from 1957 . I will follow the results of this request with great interest. steve clifford

Many thanks for your entry Steve. The Ministry of defence have all the facts and figures relating to this period and are fully aware if they release them, the general Public would realise British Servicemen and their Allies were used in a 'Human medical Experiment' to discover the effects radiation had on the human body. The MOD will not give any information on radiation levels unless the figures have been 'Doctored' to disguise the truth. It is only Civilian AWRE Workers that have access to the true levels of radiation they received. But, it was only Civilian Staff that were supplied with protective clothing and respirators when entereing areas of high radiation. All protection was denied to Servicemen as they were used as 'Human Guinea Pigs'. The Ministry of Defence have to answer to the atrocities committed against their own Servicemen.
