Racism related incidents

Dear Lauren

Following your recent enquiry regarding racism incidents here at the
University of Essex, I am pleased to be able to provide you with the
information that you requested below.

You asked for the following:

Please could I have a breakdown in spreadsheet format of the following
information from 2013-16:

- The number of racism related incidents that have been reported at the
university or it's campus

- Details of the type of incident if possible (i.e. verbal assault,
physical attack)

- The date each incident occurred

I can confirm that only three (3) racist incidents involving students were
reported to the Proctor, as follows:

On 2^nd May 2015 bananas were thrown or dropped from a window of an
accommodation building as students passed below which was perceived by the
complainant as racist.

On 24^th May 2015 comments were posted on social media which were
perceived by the complainant as racist.

On 17^th November 2015 comments were posted on social media which were
perceived by the complainant as racist.

I can also confirm that we have no record of any complaints based on
racist incidents made by students against members of staff.

With regards to staff there has been one (1) incident of staff against
staff which occurred on 19^th June 2015.  This was with regards to verbal
comments made against staff and students.
