Racism related incidents
Dear University of Exeter,
Please could I have a breakdown in spreadsheet format of the following
information from 2013 - 2016:
- The number of racism related incidents that have been reported at the university or it's campus
- Details of the type of incident if possible (i.e. verbal assault, physical attack)
- The date each incident occurred
Yours faithfully,
Lauren Chapman
Dear Ms Chapman
Thank you for your enquiry. In order to deal with your request we will first require additional information to assist us in identifying the information.
Can you please clarify whether this relates only to incidents where students are the subject of the abuse or if you are also seeing information where University staff (Academic/non-Academic) or any other individual are the victims of the abuse.

Dear Ms Chapman
Thank you for your information request. Please see the University of
Exeter response below.
Please find a log of recorded allegations of racist incidents on the
University campus in the relevant period split into informal and formal
complaints. Formal complaint records are maintained by Human Resources
where a formal complaint against a member of staff was made. For
completion we have also provided the outcome of any allegation received
and investigated by Human Resources through the formal process.
Allegations reported informally to Dignity and Respect Advisers are
recorded separately and anonymously by the Equality and Diversity Team.
The Equality and Diversity Team also have a mechanism for informal
reporting of incidents, which includes the option of reporting incidents
anonymously. We are unable to identify where an informal complaint has
been taken forward into a formal complaint and these may therefore be
double counted. The university is unable to provide information on the
outcome of any incident/allegation that was not formally
reported/investigated.
Please note that we have been unable to comply with your request in full.
It is our view that providing the precise dates of the
incidents/allegations where these are held may allow for the possible
re-identification of individuals. This information is exempt under
section 40 (personal information) of the Freedom of Information Act
(FOIA), as the information constitutes third party data. Section 40(2)
provides that personal data about third parties is exempt information if
one of the conditions set out in section 40(3) is satisfied. Under the FOI
Act disclosure of this information would breach the fair processing
principle contained in the Data Protection Act (DPA), where it would be
unfair to that person/s.
This response has been prepared in accordance with a request received
pursuant to Freedom of Information Act 2000. The supply of documents
under FOI does not give the person who receives the information an
automatic right to re-use the documents without obtaining the consent of
the copyright holder.
If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the
right to ask for an internal review. You must submit this in writing
within two months of receipt of this notification and send to me in the
first instance. Please quote the reference above.
If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have
the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a
decision. The Information Commissioner can be contacted at: Information
Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9
