The request was partially successful.

Dear Queen Mary, University of London,

Please could I have a breakdown in spreadsheet format of the following
information from 2013 - 2016:

- The number of racism related incidents that have been reported at the university or it's campus

- Details of the type of incident if possible (i.e. verbal assault, physical attack)

- The date each incident occurred

Yours faithfully,

QM FOI Enquiries, Queen Mary University of London

Dear Lauren

Thank you for your email.

In the last three years the number of reported racist incidents is relatively small, 5 in total. The annual totals are:
2013 = 2
2014 = 1
2015 = 1
2016 = 4

We are not able to supply more specifics about the nature of the offences or about the victims or complainants because it could allow you, or someone else, to identify individuals. This would reveal personal data about these individuals and since they have neither consented nor would reasonably expect this information to be released to the world at large, we believe this would not be fair and thus breach the first data protection principle. Moreover, it could cause damage or distress to be identified as connected to such an incident. As such, this information is exempt under s.40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act, by virtue of s.40(3)(a)(i). This is an absolute exemption.

If you are dissatisfied with this response, you may ask QMUL to conduct a review of this decision. To do this, please contact the College in writing (including by fax, letter or email), describe the original request, explain your grounds for dissatisfaction, and include an address for correspondence. You have 40 working days from receipt of this communication to submit a review request. When the review process has been completed, if you are still dissatisfied, you may ask the Information Commissioner to intervene. Please see www.ico.org.uk for details.

Yours sincerely

Eleanor Crossan
