FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000

Thank you for your request for information, received at this office on 14 April 2022 in which you requested the following information:

The Freedom of Information Act relates to recorded information held by a public authority at the time of the request. Our response to your enquiry is provided below.

NICE produces a range of guidance and advice products, including clinical guidelines which are evidence-based recommendations on the care suitable for most people with a specific condition or need. Topics for our work programme are decided by NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care, plus other government departments in line with national priorities they have identified, however we don't cover every health condition, clinical scenario, or treatment.

Details of how we develop our recommendations, and the published evidence relevant to the topic identified from our searches, is published on our website. This can usually be accessed via the 'evidence tab' on the landing page for each topic. For clinical guidelines, this information is published in the full guideline or in a series of evidence reviews.

We publish a series of relevant tools and resources to help NHS bodies to assess the impact of implementing our guidance on their service and to help them to put our recommendations into practice, however responsibility for the delivery of services (and the implementation of our recommendations) rests with the appropriate NHS commissioner.

In November 2019 we published a clinical guideline on thyroid disease [NG145] (https://www.nice.org.uk/ng145). This guideline covers investigating all suspected thyroid disease and managing primary thyroid disease (related to the thyroid rather than the pituitary gland). The evidence tab (https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng145/e...) contains the evidence reviews and tools and resources tab (https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng145/r...) contains the resource impact tools and the baseline assessment tool.

The scope of this guideline is to provide guidance on what constitutes best clinical practice in the diagnosis and management of most patients with thyroid disease. However, it cannot cover every possible scenario, such as the diagnosis of people with thyroid hormone resistance. This is outside the scope of this guideline.

We do not have any other clinical guidelines on the treatment of thyroid disease.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have further more specific queries about the role of NICE, how we work or you have a specific query about a particular piece of guidance, you are welcome to contact us again.

If you have any questions on this response you are welcome to call the enquiry handling team: 0300 323 0141.

If you are unhappy with this response and want an internal review of how we handled your request, you must write to us within 40 working days of our response. Send your request to: Associate Director, Corporate Office, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2nd Floor, 2 Redman Place, London, E20 1JQ or email: [email address]. When we receive your request we will send you an acknowledgement within 5 working days.

The Associate Director, Corporate Office, will review your complaint and send you a full reply usually within 20 working days. If you are dissatisfied with the outcome of this review, you can apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision at: The Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF.

I hope this information is helpful. Please tell us how we did by completing our short survey. It will only take you a couple of minutes.

Kind regards
Janet
