Dear J Roberts

Thank you for your email of 26 October 2014 in which you requested
information in the following terms:

You recently provided the following information:

"2011/2012 - 261 Cases reviewed by external reviewers"

[1]https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/

percentage_of_review_requests#comment-54627

Information previously provided:

"Between April 2011 - March 2012, 241 cases were reviewed by external
reviewers."

https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/e...

Please confirm the monthly start and end dates concerning the figure of
261 that you have provided.

The monthly start and end dates concerning these figures are both April
2011 – March 2012.  It may be helpful if I explain why there is a
discrepancy in these figures.

To return a figure of 241, a search was undertaken for reviews that were
resolved by an external reviewer between April 2011 and March 2012.

To return a figure of 261, a search was undertaken for reviews that were
resolved by an external reviewer where the initial request for review was
between April 2011 and March 2012.

I apologise if you were caused any confusion.

Kind regards

David Thomas

I can't really see why these two figures should be different given the search criteria was virtually the same?

Dear foiofficer,

I am now more confused.

The figure of 241 relates to ALL reviews that were resolved by an external reviewer between April 2011 and March 2012. It relates to a broader category than the figure of 261.

The figure of 261 relates to reviews that were resolved by an external reviewer where the initial request for review was between April 2011 and March 2012.

How can the figure representing the broader category be less than that for the narrower category?

Yours sincerely,

J Roberts

Dear J Roberts

Thank you for your email of 22 November 2014 in which you queried the
previous explanation of the difference in figures provided regarding the
number of external reviews undertaken in 2011/2012.

To further explain, one category does not represent broader or narrower
criteria than the other.  The categories are simply different.

The first category represents the number of reviews that were resolved by
an external reviewer between April 2011 and March 2012, regardless of the
date of the initial request for review.  In other words, the review was
finalised between April 2011 and March 2012, but the initial review may
have been requested before or during that period.

The second category represents those reviews resolved by an external
reviewer where the initial request for review was between April 2011 and
March 2012 regardless of the date the request was resolved.  In other
words, the review was initially requested between April 2011 and March
2012, but it may have been finalised during or after that period.

Again, I apologise for any confusion on the matter.

Sincerely

David Thomas
