Public liability of employees

The request was successful.

Dear Shetland Islands Council,
1) By what means are council employees covered for public liability?
2) Are they covered individually, or as a group?

Yours faithfully,

Stuart Hill

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request. Shetland Islands Council's response is as follows:-

1) The request is not clear. Please be more specific or give examples of the "means".

2) This request is confusing. Public Liability insurance is not arranged for individuals or for groups of individuals within a business or organisation. The “insured” is the business or organisation.

If it is of use, we can confirm that Shetland Islands Council has Public Liability insurance that covers any negligent act, omission or error by an employee or member whilst carrying out their duties on behalf of the Council that results in injury to others or damage to the property of others.

I trust that this response meets your request. However, if you are dissatisfied with the way in which the Council has dealt with your request for information then you may ask the authority to review its actions and decisions in relation to your request, by submitting a formal appeal. The process for lodging appeals is set out in the attached leaflet.

Kind regards,

Dear Shetland Islands Council,

Thank you for you prompt reply. I used the word 'means' because I was not sure whether individuals were bonded, or whether all employees were covered by a blanket insurance policy.

Could you please confirm that none of your employees carry individual bonds and that all are covered by the same public liability insurance policy?

Yours faithfully,

Stuart Hill

Thank you for your email.

Shetland Islands Council does not have individual "bonds" in relation to Public Liability for employees or members. A blanket insurance policy covers all employees and members for Public Liability.

I trust that this response meets your request. However, if you are dissatisfied with the way in which the Council has dealt with your request for information then you may ask the authority to review its actions and decisions in relation to your request, by submitting a formal appeal. Thanks,
Sherrell
