Provision of phlebotomy services
Dear Ayrshire and Arran NHS Board,
Please could you describe the provision of phlebotomy services by your Board?
In addition to District Nurses employed by the Health Board, please describe:
1. Are phlebotomy services provided by phlebotomists employed by the Health Board?
2. Are phlebotomy services provided directly by GP practices by phlebotomists employed by them and, if so, how are GPs remunerated for this?
3. How are blood samples transported from the point of collection to the laboratory for processing?
4. Do any phlebotomy services provided by your Health Board post blood samples to the laboratory for processing?
Yours faithfully,
Dr Robert S. Coull

Good Afternoon,
Request for Information under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act
2002
Thank-you for your Freedom of Information request, please see the response
to your request below:
Please could you describe the provision of phlebotomy services by your
Board?
Phlebotomists are based at Crosshouse and Ayr Hospitals. They cover
inpatient and outpatient areas at both sites. In addition they provide a
service at Anti-coagulant clinics held within the health board area. They
are currently managed via the Haematology Department.
In addition to District Nurses employed by the Health Board, please
describe:
Q1. Are phlebotomy services provided by phlebotomists employed by the
Health Board?
A1. Yes. A Community Phlebotomy Model of care was launched on 15^th August
2018 whereby patients that would have previously received a blood test by
their GP (generated from a secondary care request) will now receive their
blood test via this new community service. New patients will access this
service in the next few weeks. This will be introduced gradually across
Acute Hospital specialties.
Q2. Are phlebotomy services provided directly by GP practices by
phlebotomists employed by them and, if so, how are GPs remunerated for
this?
A2. Yes. Many practice receptionists are also trained phlebotomists and
perform a dual role and the majority of practices will have healthcare
assistants. The GPs receive a global sum from the Scottish Government and
the funding for staff is included within this pot.
Q3. How are blood samples transported from the point of collection to the
laboratory for processing?
A3. Via NHS Ayrshire and Arran laboratory van
Depending upon the time of sample taking samples are left in designated
areas for pick up by laboratory porter or taken to lab by phlebotomist at
end of shift.
Q4. Do any phlebotomy services provided by your Health Board post blood
samples to the laboratory for processing?
A4. No, the laboratory van will pick up the samples.
