Projects supported by the Leeds Tech Hub Fund

The request was successful.

Dear Leeds City Council,

With regard to the recent announcement of grants awarded by the Leeds Tech Hub Fund, please could you answer the following questions:

OPEN DATA INSTITUTE

Will the £100,000 allocated to the Leeds Open Data Institute be paid to the owner of Munroe House or to the Institute?

How much new square footage of tech hub space is the ODI Leeds committed to creating in return for the grant? How many extra workspaces and what other facilities will be created? What support package – subsidised workspace, business advice etc - will be available to future tenants?

What specific outcomes will be monitored by the council with regard to the ODI’s project plan to “help cement the Quarry Hill area as a home for tech and culture cross-overs”?

EAST STREET ARTS

Which building (or part of building) will be converted to house the BEETA project?

How much new square footage of tech hub space is East Street Arts committed to creating in return for the £550,000 grant? How many extra workspaces and what other facilities will be created? What support package – subsidised workspace, business advice etc - will be available to future tenants and who will supply it?

What specific outcomes will be monitored by the council with regard to East Street Arts’ plan “to bring together Business, Engineering, Environment, Technology and Art”?

PLATFORM

When the Tech Hub Fund was set up, the council said: “Through the grant competition and appraisal process, we will engage more broadly with the digital sector to ensure that the supported projects have broad support from the market they seek to serve.” Has that broad support been achieved? If so, please supply evidence.

How will the Platform project link to the three local universities and their research facilities?

How will the new tech hub space at Platform differ from already existing plans for the building announced by owners Bruntwood in July 2016?

(n.b. these plans already included provision for co-working, studio offices and workspaces tailored to meet the needs of large businesses, small and growing companies and individual entrepreneurs, state of the art digital connectivity, communal lounges, meeting and event spaces.)

FUTURE LABS

When was the decision taken, and by whom, to award Future Labs a £200,000 grant to support the pop-up project on Eastgate? Where was the decision published? Was the £200,000 paid to Future Labs before the offer was subsequently withdrawn? If so, will that money now have to be recovered by the Council?

Yours faithfully,

Quentin Kean
