Further to its recent acknowledgement, the University is now in a position
to provide you with a response to your request for information dated 6
August 2018.

 

 

 

1.     Could you please outline the measures you have in place to support
students who seek help with problem gambling?

Response: Initially they are assessed within the Counselling Service and
more often referred to MIND & Gamblers Anonymous for specific addiction
counselling treatment.

 

2.     Please specify the number of times the university has been
contacted by students who seek support or advice for gambling in 2017-18 ,
2016-17 , 2015-16, 2014-15,2013-14 (with an annual breakdown and gender
breakdown of the pupil)

Response: The Counselling Service CRM does not provide functionality to
search for cases which involve gambling. Service users often present with
multiple issues of which gambling may be one. In order to establish this
it would be necessary to review hundreds of student case notes, some of
which will be significant, to establish whether gambling has been
discussed. This is estimated to take more than 18 hours of staff time and
therefore is exempt under section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act
2000. Section 12 specifies that a public authority need not comply with a
request if the cost of doing so exceeded the appropriate limit which in
the case of the University is 18 hours. However, the Senior Counsellor
advises that, from his own knowledge, this figure would be very low and
estimates that he sees one or two cases per year, if at all.

 

The University has considered its duty to provide advice and assistance
under section 16 of the FOIA 2000. However, on this occasion it does not
consider that there is any alternative response available.
