May I ask under FOI Acts how many private criminal prosecutions were carried out by other bodies/organisations other than CPS and what bodies are they?

Thank you for your email of 21 October 2013, in which you ask for the
following information from the Ministry of Justice:

 

May I ask under FOI Acts how many private criminal prosecutions were
carried out by other bodies/organisations other than CPS and what bodies
are they?

 

Your request has been passed to me because I have responsibility for
answering requests relating to court proceedings statistics.

 

Your request is being handled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
(FOIA).

 

Under the Act, the department is required to provide you with a response
within 20 working days. I will write to you in response to your request
for information by 18 November 2013.

 

The Freedom of Information Act includes a number of exemptions to
releasing information. Some of these are qualified exemptions which
require us to consider whether it is in the public interest to disclose or
withhold the information. In these circumstances we may need more time to
consider your request, and if this is the case I will write to you by the
date above to inform you of when you can expect to receive a
response.

May I ask which organisations is the CPS aware of that does make or can make private prosecutions

Agencies which might bring about a private prosecution include the RSPCA, TV Licensing, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, or others. In theory, any member of the public could bring one. However, due to the limitations referred to in our response to your request, unfortunately, we would not be able to break down any figures by prosecuting agency from our centrally held data. If you wish any further information, you are welcome to ask the CPS at the below address
