Daniel Woodward

Dear Department for Education,

If possible, I'd like an annual breakdown of the Department for Education's annual expenditure on education provision in prisons between 2000 and 2023/24. If responsibility for funding education in prisons was passed to an alternative authority at some point during this period, please provide me with the requested data up until that year.

Yours faithfully,

Daniel Woodward

Thank you for your request for information, which was received on 3 July
2024. You requested an annual breakdown of the Department for Education's
annual expenditure on education provision in prisons between 2000 and
2023/24. If responsibility for funding education in prisons was passed to
an alternative authority at some point during this period, please provide
me with the requested data up until that year.  I have dealt with your
request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Following a search of the Department’s paper and electronic records, I
have established that the information you requested is not held by this
Department.  Prison education funding is not a part of the Department for
Education, instead being overseen initially by the Department for
Business, Industry and Skills, before being transferred to Ministry of
Justice in 2015-16.

The only link is students who are eligible prisoners can qualify for
tuition fee loans, and the funding will be direct with the provider, and
in line with student loan rules, not as part of general provision.

If you have any queries about this letter, please contact me via the DfE
[1]contact form on GOV.UK. Please remember to quote the reference number
2024-0019613 in any future communications.

If you are unhappy with the way your request has been handled, you should
make a complaint to the Department by writing to me within two calendar
months of the date of this letter. Your complaint will be considered by an
independent review panel, which were not involved in the original
consideration of your request.

If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint to the
Department, you may then contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Yours Sincerely
