Printing costs associated with Council Tax Invoices

The request was successful.

Dear Manchester City Council,

Printing costs associated with Council Tax Invoices

I recently received my council tax bill which included several booklets and pages of unnecessary information explaining how my council tax is used and distributed. I am not provided with a choice on how much to allocate for example to the fire and police services and therefore there is little benefit to me knowing this information.

My Query under the freedom of information act is as follows :- Please could you provide me with information relating to the cost of design, printing and subsequent postage of all of the materials included in the council tax demand which is distributed to every home in Manchester. Please itemise information where possible.

Could you also please explain why the council doesn’t simply put a line on the actual council tax invoice similar to:-
“To view how your council tax is used, please go to. www.manchester.gov.uk/???? Or to request an information pack call 0161 XXX XXXX”

The cost of such printing, postage etc is met by council tax payers and much of the material has to then be re-collected in our re-cycling and disposed of by the council and this is also paid for by the council tax payer. It seems an awful waste of time, money and environmental impact when in fact most people now have access to the internet in some way shape or form.

In relation to the above, how satisfied is the council that council tax payers are in agreement with this apparent waste and over spending?
Does the council plan to reduce paper, printing and postage use, if so how?
What is expected to be achieved and by when?
What reductions in costs could be achieved if the council reduced printing and postage for the purpose of council tax?

Thank you in advance for your consideration and response.

Yours faithfully,

Stewart McCoy

Dear Manchester City Council,

Many thanks for your comprehensive response, which I find encouraging. I hope it want too troublesome or time consuming.

I wasn't aware of some of the online invoicing options and communications, and I will now sign up accordingly. I will also promote this to colleagues and friends alike.

Yours faithfully and with thanks

Stewart McCoy
