Freedom of Information, Solent University, Southampton

Dear Adam,

Re: Request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Thank you for your request for information received by Southampton Solent
University on the 31 July 2015. Please find the University’s response
below;

1a. How much “Printing Credit" was left by leaving/graduating students
over the past three financial years?

The current printing system cannot reference when a student
leaves/graduates. However, it does record the credit balance from the last
activity. Please see the “printing balance’ left by leaving/graduating
students for the academic years 2012 to 2014:

2012-13 - £8,166

2013-14 - £9,385

2014-15 - £6,114

1b. of the unused "Printing Credit" deposited by students which have
either left or graduated from the University, what does Southampton Solent
University do with these retained funds?

All funds received from student transactions are used for operating the
print service. These expenses include; device lease/purchase costs, paper,
toner, maintenance and support.

2. How many pages of paper were printed by Students and Staff annually
over the past three years?

The total number of pages printed by students for the last three academic
years were:

2012/13 – 1,620,000

2013/14 – 1,340,000

2014/15 – 1,250,000

The University is unable to account for the exact total number of pages
printed by staff. However, it is estimated that the number is
approximately 6 million pages per annum and an additional 7 million pages
per annum from the University’s Print Shop service. These numbers are
expected to fall sharply over the next few years.

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, please contact
the University’s Clerk of Governors, Southampton Solent University, East
Park Terrace, Southampton SO14 0YN, e-mail:
[1][Solent University request email] for an internal review.  Please note
that this does not affect your right to appeal to the Information
Commissioner’s Office ([2]www.ico.gov.uk) should you remain dissatisfied
with the University’s response.

Yours sincerely
