Primary Road Classification

The request was successful.

Dear Manchester City Council,

The classification of Britain’s roads dates back to the 1920s and the existing system was overhauled in the 1960s. Prior to April 2012 Trunk roads were the responsibility of the Secretary of state however after this date local authorities are allowed to exercise this power without the need for central approval.

Please could you inform me under the Freedom of Information of any de-trunking orders prior to April 2012 relating to the A34 primary route through Manchester to Salford and any change of classification of the A34 through Manchester to Salford post April 2012.

If a change of classification was made post 2012 - The date The Roads Classification and PRN Change Form was completed and where a copy of this form is held for public scrutiny.

Yours faithfully,

Paul F Hope
