Dear D Hughes
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 - INFORMATION REQUEST
Thank you for your request for information received on 12th April 2021. We
have considered your request and enclose the following information.
1 Please give details of any special events held to recognise Pride and
trans pride
We have celebrated and been involved in Pride events since 2014. We work
under the umbrella name 'Proud Councils' and have been present at Pride
Cymru events as well as running our own awareness raising events for
staff localised events. In 2019 we ran an LGBT+ History Month Marketplace
event, where we brought together council services, voluntary sector, trade
unions, education sector to network together and to celebrate the
accessibility of all the services. At Pride Cymru events staff, senior
leaders and elected members join us and march with us under the banner
Proud Councils.
Proud Councils purpose is to improve support offered to LGBT+ staff within
local authorities in Wales and ensure that local government across Wales
is a visible leader in the field of LGBT+ rights, actively championing
LGBT+ inclusion in our communities.
2 Budgetary allocations for these events
Approx. £200 a year it depends on the activities we have planned. Last
year for example there was little cost due to lockdown, and LGBT History
Month this year was celebrated with an interactive calendar of events and
resources for the month, which was planned and developed by Proud Councils
with a cost of £65.
3 Details of any badges, insignia etc that will be worn by members of
staff or councillors or vehicle embellishments etc to recognise Pride and
or trans pride
The council changes its logo on social media to the image of the council
Logo on the rainbow flag. Members of staff and councillors have pin
badges and rainbow neck scarves and ties they can wear.
4 Will special flags to recognise these events be flown at Headquarters or
other locations if so which flags are to be flown. I.e. Rainbow flag and
/or trans rainbow flag
Yes, the rainbow flag has been flown from the council’s main council
office, Penallta House for LGBT+ History Month and during Pride week.
This year we flew for the first time the progress flag, to include
communities such as people of colour, trans individuals, people living
with HIV/Aids and those who have been lost. Flags are also flown from the
visitor centre in Caerphilly (opposite Caerphilly Castle) and we light up
Penallta House and Blackwood Miners Institute in the rainbow colours.
