Dear R Brunk

Thank you for your enquiry dated 11^th March, received by us on the same
date concerning preventing and dealing with sexual harassment here at the
University of Essex.  Your request is being handled under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000.  Please see our response below.

Your Request

1. Does the University have a policy for staff regarding sexual
harassment/misconduct between (a) staff and staff, (b) staff and students?
Yes
If so, please provide this, preferably a link to it or electronically.
Such a policy might concern definitions, how to report, processes, and so
on. Please see
[1]https://www.essex.ac.uk/-/media/document...
Please also see the attached PDF document, the University Complaints of
Harassment or Bullying Procedure.

2. What kind of training (e.g. online or in-person; voluntary or
compulsory) is provided to staff regarding sexual harassment/misconduct?
The University does not have specific Harassment and Bullying training for
staff.  However, we do have an Essential Training Policy under which all
staff are required to complete Equality and Diversity Essentials training
and all managers must complete Managing Diversity training. Both of these
programmes include information about what constitutes harassment and
bullying, both under the Equality Act 2010 and the University’s policies
in this area, how to report it and where to obtain support. In addition we
offer Bystander Intervention training to all staff which encourages staff
to intervene safely where they witness inappropriate behaviour such as
harassment or bullying.

Approximately how many staff have undergone this training in the last
year? [or last year that has available data]
As at 12 March 2020, 84.13% of all staff had completed Equality and
Diversity Essentials training and 67.78% of all managers had completed
Managing Diversity training.

3. In the last year [or last year that has available data], how many cases
of alleged sexual harassment/misconduct by staff (staff-student or
staff-staff) have been reported to the university? We have had one case
which refers to sexual harassment and was a staff-staff case.

I hope you find this information useful but if you have any questions
about the data, please let me know.

Best wishes

Dear Freedom Of Information Requests,

Thank you for this information. Can you please clarify in regard to 2: are the trainings conducted online or face to face, and are they are voluntary or mandatory? Would it also be possible to get the statistics of staff trained in number of total staff members trained, instead of percentages?

Yours sincerely,

R. Brunk

Freedom Of Information Requests, University of Essex

Dear R Brunk

I have now heard back from my colleague with regards to the questions that you raise below, as follows:

In regard to question 2:

are the trainings conducted online or face to face, and are they are voluntary or mandatory?
The training is online and is mandatory within the first 6 months of employment.

Would it also be possible to get the statistics of staff trained in number of total staff members trained, instead of percentages?
3,238 staff have completed the Equality & Diversity Essentials training and 503 managers have completed Managing Diversity training.

I hope that helps to answer your queries but if you have any further queries, please do let me know.

Best wishes
