Prevent and Internet filtering policies
Dear Green Spring Academy Shoreditch (Bethnal Green Academy),
Can you please supply:
(1) your policy or policy guidance for duties under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 duties for the various local authorities listed in Schedule 6, known as “Prevent”;
(2) your policy relating to Internet filtering, blocking and prevention of access to material deemed inappropriate;
(3) the name of any providers of Internet filtering and blocking services that you use, or else a statement that you do not block or filter content at all;
(4) a list of agreements, arrangements or Memorandums of Understanding between yourselves and bodies such as the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), the Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit (CTIRU) of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), or Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) of the City of London Police, to receive lists of illegal or illicit content, for instance for the purposes of blocking.
Finally, can you:
(5) tell me if any filtering or blocking service that you use incorporates lists from the IWF, CTIRU or PIPCU, and which lists are incorporated; and
(6) provide to me any clauses within any contract or terms and conditions of service agreed with your filtering and blocking providers that relate to their use of information from the IWF, CTIRU or PIPCU.
Yours faithfully,
Imran Aslam
Dear Green Spring Academy Shoreditch (Bethnal Green Academy),
Now normal business has resumed you have until September 21st to respond to this request.
The request was made on 17th July and school did not break up for summer for staff till 25th July and so you have already had 6 days to start gathering the information requested. You have a further 14 working days from your return which was September 4th.
Yours faithfully,
Imran Aslam
Dear Green Spring Academy Shoreditch (Bethnal Green Academy),
Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews (Jane Earl).
I am writing to request an internal review of Green Spring Academy's handling of my FOI request 'Prevent and Internet filtering policies'.
You have failed to provide the required information within the statutory timeframes and have given no reason for the delay.
A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/p...
Failure to provide me with the information required will lead to your organisation being referred to the Information Commisioners Office for non compliance with the law.
Yours faithfully,
Imran Aslam
Dear Mr Aslam
Thank you for your email. We apologise for the delay in responding to your
request.
The academy’s internet provider is the London Grid for Learning (LGfL) and
responses to your questions were provided with the support of LGfL. The
responses for each question are as follows;
1. This is addressed in section 2.8 of the academy’s ‘Child Protection
and Safeguarding Policy’ which is on our website. Please see link
below:
[1]http://www.gsacademyshoreditch.org.uk/wp...
In addition, the academy has ‘Impero’ software that monitors and alerts
the ICT department and Safeguarding Designated Person of any searches for
key words deemed inappropriate by the academy. Please see the link below
to “Prevent” guidance; [2]http://prevent.lgfl.net
2. We have different filters (whitelist) for staff and students. Please
see [3]this document.
3. Contained here in [4]this document, which is LGfL’s submission on how
they provide ‘appropriate filtering’ under the terms of ‘Keeping
Children Safe in Education’.
The product is called ‘WebScreen’ and is based on Netsweeper technology,
with extras overlain as described in the document linked to above.
4&5. LGfL does block piracy sites in general. LGfL is still checking
the response for PIPCU. Regarding the other bodies, you can see more in
the document linked above, but LGfL does incorporate lists from IWF and
CTIRU.
6. None in the Network Service Agreement between the academy and LGfL,
which is the main contract governing our relationship with them.
